Day Thirty-Seven and Thirty Eight

Day 37 and 38 (May 18 & May 19)

Day 37

Brian had a good day.  He started his morning on the FES bike again.  The motor and stim powered his legs to move for thirty minutes.

After the bike, he went to PT where they put him in the standing frame.  Brian got to 30 degrees today and his blood pressure started to drop, so his therapist didn't push him beyond that. If he can get to 80 degrees, it will open up more rehab possibilities, so that's the goal!

We ended the day in the Tech Lab.  The OT was teaching Brian how to use the sip-and-puff straw as a mouse to navigate apps/sites on his phone.  It's hard to do and will take practice...the straw does not always cooperate with Brian.  :)

Day 38

Big blessings today! I got quite the surprise from Brian and the Respiratory Therapist this morning.  Click on the video to hear the great news!  We thank God for the potential that the diaphragm pacer will work  Surgery is scheduled for Wednesday morning and surgeons won't know if they can stimulate his phrenic nerve until the surgery is in progress.  We pray the nerve will respond, as it will give Brian the possibility of getting off the vent for periods of time.

Thank you for your continued prayers and words of support! It's comforting to know we have an army standing behind us!

  6. I didn't scroll down far enough on my phone yesterday to see day 38!! the video just had Sally Cooksey and I almost in tears! This is so amazing! but what I wanted to share with you is that Brian was mentioned in our Sunday bulletin this week:
"Please pray for Brian Heine, Carissa Conlogue's co-worker, and his family. His wife is asking for specific prayers right now that Brian will have phrenic nerve stimulation which will allow him to be off the ventilator for short periods of time. They need God's strength, encouragement, and peace during this very difficult time"
Yes I have the bulletin with me, and yes I whipped it out to show Sally that this is exactly what we have been praying for all week and on Sunday morning.
    In HIS name :)

  7. Dear Brian and Julie
All I can say is WOW- I'm in tears as I write this. Such an amazing turning point in Brian's recovery. Julie I'm sure you're overwhelmed. I pray the surgery is a huge success and the girls arrival will be the extra boost you both need to get Brian ready to go home.
Prayers abound. Have faith and Brian you are one very determined man. May your inner strength and sense of humor propel you to keep fighting hard. You've got this!
    Cindy
